In 1900, Tongji Hospital was founded by Dr. Erich Paulun, a German doctor, in Shanghai, and then moved to Wuhan in 1955. After 120 years of construction and development, it has grown into a modern hospital integrating medical care, teaching, scientific research and talent training with a complete array of disciplines, a distinguished gathering of experts, exquisite medical techniques, state-of-the-art diagnostic and therapeutic equipment, outstanding research capabilities and sophisticated scientific management.

As the priority has always been given to scientific innovation, the Hospital has introduced a series of incentive policies, greatly stimulating the initiative of medical staff in scientific research. Besides, the Hospital's remarkable attainments in scientific research were acclaimed “the Tongji Phenomenon” in the medical field.
