"During the Wuhan epidemic, in the fight with Tongji Hospital, we felt her responsibility, and we traced back the glory of two cycles of sixty years in this event. Tongji Hospital has profound medical feelings, and her development history is a miniature of modern Chinese medicine." Everyone has a deeper feeling about this century-old hospital.

Li Lanjuan, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Chen Wei, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Jin Li, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Huang Hefeng, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Xie Lixin, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Jiang Hualiang, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, an Wei Yuquan, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, shared with everyone their views on Tongji and Tongji spirit. They said that since its establishment, Tongji Hospital has gathered the founders and medical masters from multiple medical fields in China and has always "gone hand in hand with China and Chinese people in times of trouble" over the past 120 years, making great contributions to the medical and healthcare careers of China. Especially since its relocation to Wuhan 65 years ago, Tongji Hospital has stood erect in central China and benefited the public. They believe that a period of 120 years is only the beginning of the journey for Tongji Hospital, and they also expect Tongji Hospital to make greater achievements in the new era.

Tongji Hospital was founded in Shanghai in 1900 by Dr. Erich Paulun, a German doctor. The word Tongji has an implied meaning of "joining hands and working together in times of trouble". After the outbreak of the anti-Japanese war, it was forced to move westward, to seven provinces, and finally settled in Yibin, Sichuan. It moved back to Shanghai in 1946. In 1955, following the decision made by the Government Administration Council of the Central People's Government, it was relocated from Shanghai to Wuhan, becoming an important medical and healthcare force in South and Central China.

Since its relocation to Wuhan, Tongji Hospital has safeguarded the health of patients in Hubei and even South and Central China, largely improving the medical and healthcare level and status of Wuhan. Like a pacesetter, it promotes the medical institutions in Wuhan to compete for progress, making the medical and healthcare level of Wuhan come out top in China. Today, Tongji Hospital shoulders five major tasks including "medical treatment, teaching, scientific research, talent cultivation and public health", and plays three major roles including "centrality, demonstration and radiation". Now, for Wuhan, Tongji Hospital is not only a medical institution, but also the city's quality card, brand logo and a symbol of spiritual culture, as well as an important element of the city's competitiveness and attractiveness.

Over the past 120 years, Tongji Hospital has always adhered to the principle of "going hand in hand with China and Chinese people in times of trouble". It participates in, takes the lead in and makes contributions in every major public health emergency, writing one medical legend after another with sophisticated medical skills, noble medical ethics, and dedication.

In the 1940s, Tongji Hospital conquered the arthralgia caused by cold or dampness (called Bi Bing in Chinese ) in Yibin and saved thousands of local people. In the 1950s when schistosomiasis was endemic in Shanghai and Jiangsu, Tongji Hospital pioneered "three-day therapy with antimony potassium tartrate" and cured more than 5 million of schistosomiasis patients. In the 1960s when leptospirosis cerebral arteritis occurred in rural areas of Hubei Province, Tongji Hospital sent experts to the local area and they spent two years to find the pathogenesis. In the late 1960s, Tongji Hospital took the lead in carrying out animal experiments and clinical studies on organ transplantation, opening the prelude to organ transplantation of China. In the 1970s, on the second day of Tangshan Earthquake, Tongji Hospital dispatched an emergency medical team, saving thousands of people. In the 1990s when a catastrophic flood broke out in Yangtze River, Tongji Hospital dispatched dozens of medical teams to the disaster area with drugs to save people, and won the collective merit citation class I for fighting flood and providing disaster relief.

Since the beginning of the new century, Tongji Hospital has bravely shouldered the responsibility of and taken the lead in the fight against SARS, snow disaster treatment, earthquake relief, response to the H7N9 avian influenza epidemic, etc., and it has successfully completed such tasks.

In 2020 when COVID-19 broke out, Tongji Hospital insisted on the principle of "people first and life matters". It pioneered in activating the fever clinic emergency mechanism in China, and voluntarily submitted a request to set Sino-French New City Branch and Optical Valley Branch of Tongji Hospital as the main battlefields for severe patient treatment. The number of intensive care beds invested, the number of severe patients received and treated and the number of fever patients received and diagnosed came out top in China. It established the "Tongji Optical Valley Model". The medical treatment expert group of the Joint Prevention and Control Mechanism of the State Council issued official documents to widely publicize and promote this model at home and abroad, which was highly praised by the central guidance group, the National Health Commission and the World Health Organization. Tongji Hospital was named "Advanced Collective in Fighting against COVID-19", and the "Sharp Knife Company" for severe patient treatment consisting of 13 teams was Selected as the "Model of the Times" by the Publicity Department of the Communist Party of China.

Since Tongji Hospital played a mainstay role in the prevention, control and treatment of COVID-19, the National Medical Center for Major Public Health Events was planned in this hospital. On the day of the event, the National Medical Center for Major Public Health Events was officially unveiled.
