Undergraduate Studies

Tongji Hospital has been undertaking the teaching tasks for more than 100 years. In 1907, Dr. Erich Paulun founded Shanghai German Medical College based in Tongji Hospital. The Medical College's undergraduate curriculum was a 5-year program, i.e. 2 years' pre-med study (i.e. pre-medicine) and 3 years' med study (i.e. post-medicine). The program was taught in German, so most Chinese students had to take 3 years to learn German. So, it was in fact an 8-year program. In 1915, Germany's Ministry of Education officially recognized the medical graduates of the Tongji Hospital academically equal to those of the German medical universities. In 1927, Medical and Engineering School was renamed Shanghai Tongji University. In 1930, it was renamed National Tongji University, and its medicine faculty was renamed Medical School of Tongji University. Tongji Hospital remained its base for medical teaching and internship. In 1955, endowed with great trust by the CPC Central Committee and the State Council, the Medical School of Tongji University and its affiliated hospitals (called “Sino-American Hospital” at that time) moved to Wuhan and merged with the Medical College of Wuhan University. The new medical faculty was named the Second Affiliated Hospital of Zhongnan Tongji Medical College. In the same year, it was renamed the Second Affiliated Hospital of Wuhan Medical College. Since then, a medical center enjoying fame at home and abroad has been serving people in Hubei Province, in southern and central China, and even in Southeast Asia. In July 1985, the Wuhan Medical College was renamed the Tongji Medical University, and the hospital was renamed the Affiliated Hospital of Tongji Medical University accordingly. In 2000, it was renamed the Second Clinical Department, Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology. Now it has become an innovative modern hospital integrating medical treatment, teaching and scientific research with a complete set of medical disciplines, a gathering of outstanding doctors, strong faculty resources, cutting-edge medical technologies, advanced diagnosis and treatment equipment, strong scientific research strength and scientific management methods.
